Earlier in the year a commercial fit-out company approached us with a brief: they had seen a vintage lighting feature, a string of illuminated pearls, that they loved. They needed something that captured the same essence, but with a cleaner, more refined finish to suit a modern commercial interior. Our job was to match the look, with updated materials, improved detailing, and a practical installation method.
Design and Prototyping Process
We set about creating the Custom Replica Lighting Feature. We began by 3D modelling the “pearls” that would form the feature. After several iterations, we printed multiple prototypes, ensuring that each piece was precise. The design evolved until we were fully satisfied with its appearance and functionality, all while ensuring it matched the client’s expectations.
The feature comprised three separate fixtures, each varying in length. This added both balance and visual interest to the final installation. We also printed 200 pearls, not only for the primary installation but to provide the client with spares for maintenance.
We designed custom connectors to link the pearls and created unique ends for the LED strips, ensuring that each fixture could be easily connected to the ceiling.
Bespoke Manufacturing, In-House Control
With the design finalised, we moved to production. Using our advanced 3D printing machines, we printed, assembled, and tested all the components in-house. This ensured complete control over the quality and process.
For the lighting, we selected warm white flexible custom-length LED strips. These were specially adapted for wiring directly into the mains, ensuring a seamless installation on-site.
Due to another project in the workshop, we temporarily moved the illuminated pearl fixture to our office for testing. This change of location didn’t hinder progress. In fact, it was a unique opportunity to ensure every detail was perfected before the fixture left our premises.
Swift Delivery and Handover
To meet the tight deadline, we arranged for same-day couriers, ensuring that the fixture reached the client on time. We meticulously tested everything before shipping, ensuring a smooth handover and a prompt installation.
Despite the tight schedule and unexpected challenges, we successfully delivered a striking illuminated pearl feature that met the client’s brief perfectly.
