You Are Here: How We Delivered the Lighting System for an Inflatable Landmark

We at envisio were commissioned to deliver the lighting system for a large-scale installation at the Southbank Centre as part of their 75th anniversary celebrations. The event was directed and designed by Carson McColl, Gareth Pugh and Danny Boyle.

The You Are Here event featured a 20m high x 14m wide inflatable pin, flown from a crane to a height of 48m above the River Thames. Positioned at the heart of the event, the structure creates a bold visual marker visible from across London, with production from Anya Tavkar and Stephen Myland.

Assembly and Creation of the Dynamic Lighting

We were tasked with designing, programming, and installing a dynamic lighting system within the inflatable structure, designed by Glow Inflatables. The system needed to deliver strong, consistent brightness while operating reliably in a challenging outdoor environment. As the structure is subject to movement, weight, and physical stress all lighting components needed to be highly durable. The instillation was rigged by West End Rigging, and a crane was provided by Southern Cranes & Access Ltd with additional services provided by Media Lifting Solutions Ltd.

We developed a customised DMX control system designed specifically for long cable runs and high-output lighting. To ensure performance, we carried out fixture testing and we refined the design by increasing brightness output to suit the final structure size.

The Result

The finished installation delivered a striking visual presence across London, with the illuminated pin standing as a centrepiece for the You Are Here event. This project highlights envisio’s ability to deliver robust lighting systems in demanding conditions. From concept through to commissioning, we provided a tailored solution built for performance, durability, and impact.
